An espresso machine is a system of water, temperature, pressure and steam. It can produce excellent drinks, but only with a good grinder, cleaning and technique.

Definition

What it is and why it matters

The machine heats water and pushes it through a fine coffee puck. Thermal stability and pressure management determine how repeatable extraction will be.

For milk drinks, the steam wand also matters: it should not only heat, but incorporate air in a controlled way to create microfoam.

Key parts

What you need to understand

01

Group

Carries water to coffee; its temperature affects extraction.

02

Pump

Creates pressure. Stability matters more than advertised bars.

03

Boiler or thermoblock

Defines thermal capacity and speed.

04

Steam wand

Should have power and control for texturing milk.

Buying

Buying recommendations

Serious entry

Look for standard portafilter, spare parts, reasonable temperature control and enough steam.

Frequent use

Consider dual boiler or good heat exchanger if you make many milk drinks.

Real budget

Reserve money for grinder, tamper, scale, pitcher and cleaning.

Avoid

Machines selling many bars as the main argument, poor proprietary portafilters and lack of spare parts.

Maintenance

Use and maintenance

Purge group

Before and after helps clean residue.

Backflush

If the machine allows it, clean internal oils with suitable product.

Descale

According to water and manufacturer. Do not improvise aggressive products.

Clean steam

Purge and wipe the wand after every use to avoid burnt milk.

Common mistakes

What to avoid

Buying machine before grinder

Espresso depends on the grinder more than it seems.

Ignoring water

Scale damages equipment and changes flavor.

Not heating up

A cold portafilter reduces consistency.

Not cleaning

Old oils ruin fresh coffee.
